Les feux et les sirènes

Assalamualaikum,

I decided to write this post, and hopefully revive my blog again because I have reached another key milestone in my life. In two days, it will be my ORD. Operationally Ready Date. This means I have completed two years of National Service to my country. I have many thoughts and reflections that can be made on the past two years of my life. I served at Alexandra Fire Station with the EMS for the past year and 8 months (roughly).

I did many things that I never thought I ever had to do. I've seen things I've never seen before. I've met people I never thought I'd meet. I encountered situations that required me to be at my best. Life or death situations.

I will miss the adrenaline, the excitement, the chaos of going for road accidents, rescue cases, or even codes. I will miss arriving on scene and just having my jaw drop upon seeing something incredibly peculiar or a situation I've never encountered.

I will miss the lights and sirens.

National Service

Assalamualaikum,

It is about time I wrote something about the next phase of my life, National Service. Two months ago I enlisted in SCDF, and went through 8 weeks of physical training phase. It was difficult at first, but slowly I got used to the training.

All said and done, I lost about 12-13 kg in that 8 weeks. Now begins the Basic Rescue Training phase, where we learn how to use all the cool tools and rescue techniques during any disaster.

I honestly think I look younger after the weight loss. Haha.

See you later. It's time for book in.

Salam. Peace.

Growing Pains

Assalamualaikum,
It has been two years. Oh how time flies. Without blogging, it seems that my mind is in a constant disarray. Many thoughts flowing in and out all the time. Without proper organisation, I feel lost. Enough about what the lack of blogging has done to me.

Many things have changed.

Life in JC was not what I thought it was. For the most of my second year, I fell, hard. Emotionally and mentally unstable. The grass is indeed greener on the other side. I did not do too well. I consistently failed many tests. It became such a norm that getting a pass deserved a reward of some sort. Often I try to preserve my thoughts in words, so I could see the kind of person I was long ago.

This year, I turn 20.

The reason I haven't been blogging, is because I've been keeping a personal sketchbook where I express myself and thoughts. I write of significant events and other emotional happenings. Truthfully, I had a depression in my second year in JC. Everything seemed bleak and gloomy. I was highly pessimistic on my outlook of life. For some reason, I felt that JC was a lost cause.

But I went for the marathon anyways. I tried my best to consolidate my thoughts. The knowledge I've received over the past 2 years were not gone, simply hidden. Hidden from my conscious thoughts. A few months before my A levels, I did my best. The best a lazy, inconsistent, fidgety person could. I never liked studying, and probably never will. My thirst for knowledge was lacking. I just felt that the knowledge I was looking for, would not be available to me from JC.

I made new friends, as well as old friends, lost from my past. A person who always made me feel better, and have a positive outlook on my life.

The few weeks up to A levels was indeed a journey. I hope I gave my best. But all is not lost.

I have considered my choices post-JC. Right now I'm waiting for my National Service, by teaching part-time in Irsyad.

It seems though, that ever since A levels ended, things changed for the better. My parents seems to be less angry to me. I've always tried my best to be a filial son. To be an obedient son. I'm tired of being a disappointment. Always needing to compete with my siblings. Well, it's time they realise that I am a different person. It's time I grew up.

And as always,
Salam and Peace be upon you.

KONY 2012

Is a scam. As usual, where there's oil, there are American troops.

Here's an article you should check out.

KONY 2012: Causing more harm than good

I quote the first 3 paragraphs:

Dear Jason Russell,

After being bombarded with your KONY 2012 crusade, I have no choice but to respond to your highly inaccurate, offensive, and harmful propaganda.  I realized I had to respond in hopes of stopping you before you cause more violence and deaths to the Acholi people (Northern Ugandans), the very people you are claiming to protect.

Firstly, I would like to question your timing of this KONY 2012 crusade in Uganda when most of the violence from Joseph Kony and the LRA (The Lord’s Resistance Army) has subsided in Uganda in the past 5 years. The LRA has moved onto neighboring countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central Africa Republic, and Southern Sudan. Why are you not urging action in the countries he is currently in? Why are you worried about Kony all of a sudden when Ugandans are not at this present moment?

This grossly illogical timing and statements on your website such as “Click here to buy your KONY 2012 products” makes me believe that the timing has more to do with your commercial interests than humanitarian interests. With the upcoming U.S. presidential elections and the waning interest in Invisible Children, it seems to be perfect timing to start a crusade. I also must add at this point how much it personally disgusts me the way in which you have commercialized a conflict in which thousands of people have died. ...(read more)

New Year

Assalamualaikum,
It's a new year..! The year of 2012. The year when things change, insyaAllah! I will be getting my 'O' level results on 9 January 2012. I'm as nervous as can be. I hope I do well enough to have a wide variety of choices. Because, right now, I am extremely unsure of where to go. (Ok, NOW it's really new year, and there's a load of noise and screaming of "Happy New Year" greetings.. Awesome neighbourhood). Back to O levels,

I don't know where to go after this Should I follow my interests in IT, programming and games, and join a Poly, or do I risk an A level to get a much better chance of going to University. After all, the ultimate goal is to get a degree because, without a degree, you can't survive in Singapore. So, what do I do now? If I join a Poly, I have to spendthree years instead of two, which is no big deal to me. I mean, I spent an extra year in Secondary school like it's nothing, so why not spend another year in tertiary?

O levels are over!

Assalamualaikum!
At least it was over for the past 3 days. I took my last paper (Chemistry Paper 1) on Monday 14/11/11 Kinda exciting at first, but it got boring quickly. REALLY quickly. I'm bored out of my mind right now. I have no idea what to do. There seemed to be so many things I could do when I was looking forward to the end of my O levels, but now... =_=

Ok that's it.
Salam. peace!

Graduation

And so we graduated.

"Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana..."

I had a great time last night for our graduation. Hanging out with future lawyers, engineers, doctors, billionaires. It was a memorable dinner event, followed by an informal movie outing til midnight.

2 more weeks. To my O levels. This is what matters now. Good luck to everyone.

Salam. Peace.

Simplicio and religion

I overheard Simplicio's conversation with his friend a library one day. Studying for a test, Simplicio decides to bother his friend with a simple complaint, or statement if you will.

"No offence to the Muslims and Christians, but I think that religion does not show that you are more disciplined." Simplicio said. His companion just nodded indifferently, focused on his reading. "If you need a god to tell you how to go through day to day life, how does that show that you're disciplined? It just shows that you are unable to be independent." Simplicio added.

"That's why I'm a free-thinker. I can do anything I want without needing a "god" to tell me what to do." He finally declared. His friend just couldn't be bothered, buried in books.

My argument to Simplicio:

How does being able to do anything you want shows discipline? How do you know what are the right things, the right ways, to do in life? How do you know if

We are but mere humans. We need guidance at all point in life. If anything, following God's commands are the truest mark of discipline. Being able to abide by difficult and challenging principles makes you more disciplined and matured, especially if these "commands" makes us better humans.

Muslims can fast for a month, pray five times a day, refrain from pork and alcohol, and other haram foods. Christians go to church every week (mostly without fail), and they pray before going to sleep. Hindus (and Buddhists) don't eat beef. All these challenges makes people with religions more disciplined as they have to abide by the rules of their religion.

Meanwhile, you eat anything you want, do anything you like and live by your own 'rules'. You have no restrain and run wild. Way to be disciplined, Simplicio.

AEP Coursework

Assalamualaikum,
As of yesterday, the deadline for the coursework was finally reached. Everybody had to stop working on their work and submit to the teacher to lock up. It's a great milestone to finally reach. And I really hope I will do well.

In other news, I had a terrible nightmare last night. I dreamt I received my O levels results and it was less than perfect. Ok, no. It was terrible. I pretty much failed everything. I felt so real, imagine the relief I felt when I woke up. It was a wake up call for me. I need to buck up, and work this last 37 days before my papers.

Pray for me.
Salam...Peace..

Preliminaries and Art

Assalamualaikum.
Yes, a third blog post in this week. Perhaps to make up for my previous lack of blogging. Indeed my second prelims have started. I've done my English, Social Studies and Elementary Mathematics Paper 1, papers so far. Everything SHOULD go fine, but hey, we know my life, there's bound to be a screw up at every corner. Tomorrow there's Chemistry, and the next day EMaths Paper 2 along with Malay Composition.

Prelim 2 will only last 2 weeks, unlike Prelim 1, which lasted a MONTH. That's because there are no holidays, etc. So yeah! English Oral is next Monday.

Art is due in 3 weeks. I'm dead.

2) My second preliminary exams just started!
3) I've got alot to do.

Haha. It's finally here. My prelims. And in 70 days, I'll be doing my O levels.

Salam...Peace.

P.s. I also have English O Level Orals next Monday! Gasp!

Simplicio and the alcohol

Here's a short story for your enjoyment.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was talking to a person named Simplicio. As we conversed, the topic of alcohol and Islam's view of it was brought up.

He asked me eagerly, "Can you drink alcohol?"

"No." I answered, simply.

"Even on rare occasions? Say, a holiday or a celebration? Perhaps a little sip?" He pursued.

"No, not a sip, not ever. Alcohol is forbidden in Islam. Some crudely call it the devil's urine." I explained. "Why do you drink alcohol? Why do you need to drink it, to celebrate an occasion? It's not a necessity, I'm sure you can live without it." I inquired.

He looked at me with an astounded look of disbelief. "How could this person say such a thing, did he not know about the beauty of alcohol?" he thought.

"It's nice. At times you get high, and you feel happier than you are. It brings a sense of joy and ecstasy to the drinker. I'm sure you'd like to experience that occasionally?"

"No. There are other ways to feel enlightened and at peace. Peace is part of Islam. Alcohol brings many more harms too. Alcohol can cause intoxication, it destroys your liver, it causes people to do many stupid things. Like drunk driving." I rebutted, slightly annoyed that he wouldn't understand. Simplicio looked exasperated, as if to mock my ignorance.

"Look, you wouldn't know anything about alcohol. It's delicious, and it's a good thing to have it." he said, in desperation and scoffed at my lack of intelligence, as if he knew what was better. He walked away, shaking his head, with the aura of higher intellect, thinking he has lost a person from his cause.

We all know, who truly lost who. :)

113 Days

Assalamualaikum,
It is now the month of July. I have since calmed down and regain my footing on my sanity from my prior breakdown. I have 113 days left before my first paper. 50 days left to Prelim 2. And that number is only getting smaller.

Yet here I am, dragged all the way to Johor because my parents 'wants to'. Now, when school has started, you decide to go out. What about my hell of a holiday? Either way, it's a waste of my precious time. Inconsiderate.

That is all.

Eclipse

Assalamualaikum,
I haven't blogged in awhile. I'm just gonna post a short note. Basically I got crappy results. Now I'm mugging the entire holidays down. So yeah. There's supposed to be a total lunar eclipse today, at 3AM-5AM. Kinda late, but I can't sleep so might as well.
Salam. Peace.

Holidays? Not so much.

Assalamualaikum,
It's 31 May 2011, Tuesday, today. This post is written at 10:38PM, I probably just made it the third post for May, one short for my "one post per week" goal. Too bad. I've been busy, as usual. It's the norm to be 'busy' nowadays. Perhaps part of society, to be 'busy'. I finished my prelim papers last Tuesday, so it has been exactly one week since I ended my exams. This week is technically a holiday, but I have school for the entire week; as per normal. Well, these are just some simple sacrifices need to be made.

Important things. I received my papers today! But it's all unstable and subject to change and complex calculations, so I will not dwell too much on that and just wait for the final reports. With the marks and all. Didn't do too shabby for a Prelim paper, in Victoria School, the school with super high expectations and standards. Not to pick on it but I don't think this amount of stress on a student is humane. I pretty much burnt out in the middle of the third week of my exams. I tried my best to study and revise, but the drive just wasn't there. Everything went against my plans during the first two weeks of exams. Renovations and stuff just bothering me. You might accuse me of being too sensitive, well it's true, I'm too sensitive. I'm sensitive to dust, noise and change. Change is needed in life, and I have reactions to it. Well, my point is that I don't mind doing such tough papers from VS, I mean, I asked for it. I really want to do well for my O levels.

I recently read that expressing your life goals to others will make you LESS likely to achieve it. Based on the evidence brought forward, I'm partially bought. Well, in case you haven't realised, I never really blogged about my real goals in life. Nor have I told anyone, except Abdullah, even then, he doesn't know it's my goals, (I think). I only give subtle clues to what I want to do in life. From this post, you know that my goals require good O levels. You can also tell from my concerns that I've expressed in the past about societal, political and educational issues. Alone I may not combat these problems, but I do hope to achieve something in my life. Enough said.

Back to reality, I guess my holidays are gone. The next three weeks will mostly be dedicated to completing my Art Coursework. Not everyday of course, whenever I deem fit I guess. Art is all about the mood. You cannot force someone to sit in a room and make 'art'. Maybe one day it's possible. Abdullah has agreed to act for my video. But I promised myself that I will dedicate MORE time for my revisions. Perhaps do some of the past year prelim papers that I neglected to do. I always assumed doing O levels papers were enough. Well, O level papers are enough for O levels, not for the extremely difficult prelims.

The constantly changing subjects in this post mirrors my state of mind. I type, where my mind wanders. Now, I'm going everywhere. I'm thinking about everything. The day I stop thinking, is the day I die, as a person, a human.

Some rough information about my prelim papers: I did 'above average' for English. You do not want to know what the average is. I was short of one mark for most of my paper to achieve a higher grade, meaning they were all 'high B4s, B3s, A2s' etc. I don't know if you understand. That is all I guess.

Salam...Peace!

A sidenote:
Who is this 'you' I'm speaking to?
I've always imagined 'you' to be the future generation. I do not intend people to read this now. If you do then, fine. It's great. My treasures, adventures and misadventures.I wish to leave some form of knowledge, life lesson for those in the future. It may not be relevant to your time (seeing as times change quickly nowadays), but it may provide insight into the mind and life of a person from the beginning of the 21st century. A brief documentation of my life, in text. (There used to be pictures, but I don't upload those anymore.)

I've been getting ideas about maybe publishing my blog in a book? Hmm? Whadya think of that?

Singular Matrix

How was I supposed to know what a singular matrix is? Sigh, 4 marks down the drain all because of an obscure sentence on line 7 in page 5 of my textbook that escaped me.
'If |M| = 0, we say that M is singular'

Otherwise, the only thing that could bring me down is my carelessness. Tomorrow is A Maths Paper 2. Been doing Prelim compilations since noon. That's a measly 2 hours and 40 minutes spent.

On a side note, I hope the renovations, drilling, painting destroying will be done soon. It has been extremely distracting since it started two weeks before my exams. In fact, studying in the PUBLIC LIBRARY, that's right the one filled with noisy neighborhood school students, was more productive.

A quick one (GE2011)

Assalamualaikum,
It's morning right now. I'm in the bus interchange and I realised that I lacked 2 blog posts for this month. I guess I'll start with the General Elections 2011. Well, as usual PAP won a vast majority of the seats, but just barely. They got their so-called mandate by winning about 60% of the votes. However, this elections was a reason to rejoice because one opposition party managed to win a GRC. Clearly, right now I'm pro-opposition, Workers' Party in particular. But this is not completely uncalled for.

Many of my politically apathetic teenage peers have asked me,"If its not broken, why change it? Just vote for the PAP." The problem is, it is broken. The PAP has been increasingly arrogant and do not really put the needs of Singaporeans as a priority. The have Singapore's best interest. Unfortunately, in this modern day and age, Singapore and Singaporeans have slowly grown to be two separate entities. The government has been made to be completely dependent on the PAP, by the PAP. All they care about is increasing our GDP and economy. Well, GDP doesn't necessarily mean local-produced/earned revenue. They've been hiring LOADS of foreigners to take Singaporean jobs. Nobody seems to care about extremely high HDB prices or the fact that ministers earn in 2 hours what normal people earn in a month. Actually, we do. The 40%, whom I greatly respect because of their courageous attitude for standing against an oppressing government, cares about Singaporeans. Unfortunately, because of the remaining 60%, 100% of Singaporeans (I mean 51% of Singaporeans (locals)) have to suffer with you.

All in all, I believe that uninterrupted rule and control, corrupts. As the old adage goes:"Power corrupts, absolute power, corrupts absolutely." More opposition needs to be in parliament and allow for healthy debate of policies and bills; to ensure Singaporeans' needs are placed first.
Thank you.

Salam..peace!
P.s. I have A Maths exams today! Extremely nervous!

General Elections, Olevels Preliminary One and less important things

Assalamualaikum.

Truly, the hype and excitement of this year's General Election has gotten to me. I have been trying to keep track of the different parties who are competing for the various constituency. This year is the year with the greatest number of opposing parties since the independence of Singapore. All constituencies are challenged except Tanjong Pagar. A particular party has been doing quite well in their rallies. The Workers Party. Fresh faces to change the political landscape of Singapore? Could this be the year PAP finally steps down? I don't know, and in my humble opinion, I don't think so. Maybe the opposition can win about a quarter or a third? I mean all my life in Singapore, PAP has been the one controlling my home. It's been going fine, and perhaps many people feel that way, they don't want things to change? Perhaps they do not see what mistakes the current government has done. Maybe there aren't any, if you hide them well.

So I heard the Workers' Party had a great turnout on their rally, about 3000 people, or more? The digits escape me. I would love to see a new government with equal opposition on both sides? This would make the news pretty interesting I must say. However, the people do not want their peace to be interupted either, it's a tough balance between...ermm, fun and peace? I notice I've been writing plenty of question marks. Perhaps my current lackadaisical attitude is making me lazy to think? There it goes again, another question mark. Let's move to a more serious thing. My prelims.

It is bugging me quite abit, hence the lateness of this entry. I can safely say that I have revised my Maths and Sciences about 90%. I'm left with Geography and PAP's propaganda of a subject, Social Studies. I haven't really went into "overdrive", nor have I been slacking. I did plenty of ten year series and compilations. I've made notes. I hope I am prepared. I mean, I'm almost, ALMOST, at my limit. I'm, as usual, blogging in extra, as they say, "Chim", English to practice for my English Compositions and Social Studies essays as well as my Study Of Visual Art paper. That's a lot actually now that I look again. Have I bitten off more than I can swallow. Hopefully not. I can do this, InsyaAllah.
"But there's no sense crying over every mistake."
-Portal, Still Alive
That song is nice. Somewhat nostalgic in an odd way. Oh yes, the less important thing. Today 29 April 2011, there's a Royal Wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton in the UK, one of the few places on Earth with a monarchy. Politics. I don't really like the word, and I regret delving into that theme here, but it must be done I guess. I'll end it off right here. Expect more soon, since I need to practice.

Salam, Peace. For you my dear reader.
